There’s a lifetime in his gaze.
A bouquet of flowers they both sneeze at trying to smell. A laugh, reaching forward to hold his hand at dinner. The words ‘Will You Marry Me’ painstakingly carved only a quarter of a millimeter thick into the specimen she peers down at in the lab. That beautiful smile as he slips the wedding band on her finger. There’s a little house, tucked in tightly between two others, but it’s their own little oasis. A hospital bed, cradling a child with his hair and her adorable button nose. “Every bit of what’s inside you,” she tells the little girl, tucked into her spaceship bed, “was once inside a star! And thousands and thousands of other beautiful things. And the DNA that’s inside you right now, is made up of me and your Daddy’s DNA. So even when you’re asleep, you’re not really alone, because you’ve got me and Daddy and all those stars.” There’s family dinners, first days of school, and college graduations. And there’s holding hands in the park, taking a walk, feet shuffling because the arthritis makes it difficult, but with bright, happy smiles. And there’s a bed, where lying next to each other, they both close their eyes at the same time.
Fitz watches her face and knows now it will never happen that way. Except for the last part, and only in the way she describes it now. But her words give him hope, that one day, his particles will rearrange into someone who loves her particles as much as he does in this moment. And maybe that someone or something will have the strength to tell her what he never could.
